Visionary Rolls Out Broadband in Dayton Wyoming

By: Brian Worthen
Visionary Communications has completed the roll-out of wireless broadband in Dayton, Wyoming. Dayton marks the 9th rural community where Visionary has been the first to introduce broadband internet. DAYTON, Wyo. (PRWEB) August 13, 2005 -- Visionary Communications has completed installation of wireless broadband internet in Dayton, Wyoming. With a population of 678, Dayton is the smallest community where Visionary has introduced broadband internet. Visionary has been the first internet provider to offer broadband in eight other rural communities in the last five years. The new broadband tower in Dayton is self-sufficient, operating off solar panels and a series of car batteries. The tower has two radios on it - one to connect to subscribers around town, and backbone radio that connects to the T1 line. The T1 line then carries customer traffic to Visionary's internet backbone. The Padlock Ranch, a local businesses in Dayton, has provided Visionary with office space for the T1, and space in a cattle pasture for the tower. The tower required a high point within Dayton to distribute the radio signal to broadband customers. "Visionary has rolled out broadband in a number of towns through local partnerships," says Brian Worthen, CEO and President of Visionary. "The Padlock is a great host for our service - they even put up a fence around our tower at their expense to keep the cows out." Worthen also commented on Visionary's main challenge in Dayton - trees. Due to the dense foliage in Dayton, Visionary introduced a new radio in the 900Mhz range, which penetrates trees and "bounces" over hills. According to Visionary's wireless administrator, Preston Schilling, "The trees were a challenge. We'd used 900Mhz before with mixed results, and decided to order this newer unit. All of us were impressed at the ability of the new radio to connect to a tower it can't see." Most fixed wireless towers require line of site, meaning a subscriber must mount the wireless antenna on their home or business that can directly connect to a tower. The equipment used by Visionary creates a non-line of site connection to the tower, increasing coverage to the majority of homes and businesses in Dayton. The company met with citizens of Dayton at a town meeting to discuss broadband options in March. Visionary committed to bring the service to town once ten customers sent contracts in to Visionary's main office. The service was operational the first week of July. Visionary Communications is Wyoming's pioneering broadband provider, offering DSL in 18 Wyoming communities, and wireless broadband in 11 Wyoming communities. The company provides internet services in more than 90 towns and cities.
